What is book coaching?

Book coaching parallels sports coaching. You bring the talent and expertise. I bring the process know-how to guide you through the planning, writing, and publishing to bring your book to life. My guidance will ensure you use your time well, your book gets your message across and wows your readers, and you have a resource and companion along the way.
As a book coach, I can help you:
Clarify your book idea
Determine the publishing path that best serves your goals
Develop a book proposal
Develop a detailed outline so you can be confident your first draft will be on the right path
Craft a writing plan, including how you will find time to write
Stay on track and revise efficiently by reviewing your drafts and providing editorial feedback
Feel supported and not alone in your book quest by answering your questions, helping you navigate tough spots, and cheering you on

Get clear on your book idea

For nonfiction writers at the very beginning of the book process…
This package helps you get started on your book with a clear road map. It’s best if:
You have an idea, but not a clear vision of how to communicate it
You struggle to find time to write
You don’t want to spend time figuring out how to start or what to do next
You know you’ll need research, but aren’t sure what kind or how to go about it
With this package, we’ll collaborate to:
Hone your book idea to convey your key message, with narratives and approaches that will resonate with your readers
Define your book’s market and target audience
Understand your goals for the book and how it factors into your life and career
Identify any research needed and how you’ll get it
Explore publication options and determine your optimal publication path
Create an outline to unfold your idea, supporting information, and stories in the optimal sequence
Craft a writing plan to help you get the manuscript done
To accomplish this, we’ll meet on Zoom for six-to-nine 45-minute sessions. You’ll have between-session assignments. I’ll provide editorial feedback on your outline. You’ll have email and phone access to me while we work together for quick questions that arise between meetings.
The time it will take to get clear on your book idea depends on the cadence of our meetings. For example, meeting weekly gets it done in 1 ½-2 months; biweekly, 3-4 months.
Get clear on your book idea package cost: Starting at $2,750.
The next step is to request a free 30-minute chat. We’ll discuss your book idea, where you are in the process, and your goals for your book. If we discover we are a good fit to work together, I’ll send you a contract. Once you sign it and I receive your first half payment, we can craft a schedule that works for you and start.
P.S. This package also dovetails with developing your book proposal. If you decide to opt for that package as well, I’d give you a discount on it and we could combine the two.

Chaela’s experience

— Chaela Volpe
Author of Brain-Fueled Workplace
“In the early days of writing my first business book I felt lost. So many ideas. Sooo many pages. I sought advice from published authors. One directed me to Evelyn to beta read my manuscript. Evelyn was completing her own book when she took me on as a client and openly shared her experience. I immediately felt I was no longer alone!

She asked strategic questions about my goals, concerns, the history of my project, my audience. Then, we agreed a list of specific questions to focus her review. After patiently combing through my unwieldy document, Evelyn provided thorough feedback: Where to focus, what to strengthen or cut. She helped me evaluate my ideas and how I organized them. This was most critical for me, as someone with ADD. She recommended strategies for making technical content relatable, helping refine my storytelling to convey new business concepts.

WAY beyond beta reading, Evelyn became my writing coach and mentor. She recommended articles, books, ideas, solutions… In all of this, Evelyn helped re-frame my view of my work. I was not “just writing a book” I was on a journey as a first-time author to introduce ideas I hoped would transform modern business. I am so grateful Evelyn facilitated this perspective shift. Powerful stuff. I highly recommend Evelyn and her magic hat of expert skills!”

Work with your writing coach & companion

For nonfiction authors ready to write…
Writing a manuscript can feel isolating. Long hours toiling on your own. Not everyone has time to find a writing group. It’s easy to get stuck and let your writing languish. With me as your coach, you don’t have to go it alone.
As we work one on one:
You’ll have accountability – deadlines for pages to help you stay on track and keep your momentum
We can address issues as they arise, so you don’t let a snag turn into a delay and can keep going
You’ll get regular feedback. I’ll review up to 5,000 words (about 20 pages, double-spaced) for each Zoom call, and convey my thoughts and comments
You’ll get an editorial review of your work, so you have written notes to refer to when you go to revise
You’ll have email and phone access to me while we work together for quick questions that arise between meetings
We’ll meet on Zoom for each of our 45-minute sessions
Work with your writing coach & companion package cost:
$1350 for four calls per month (weekly)
$750 for two calls per month (biweekly)

The next step is to request a free 30-minute chat. We’ll chat about your book, where you are in the process, and your publishing goals.
If we discover we are a good fit to work together, I’ll send you a contract. Once you sign it and I receive your first month’s payment, we can craft a schedule that works for you and start.

Revise your existing book

For nonfiction authors revising a previously published book…
Your published book is a point of pride, a part of your personal brand, and an important asset. As time goes on, you may want to revise it to:
Honor an anniversary (i.e. 10th anniversary edition)
Reflect the audience that gravitates to your book rather than the one you originally targeted (maybe it sold better to students than business owners)
Respond to an event that affected the book (like Kim Scott’s Radical Candor that got mentioned on the TV show “Silicon Valley,” not in a way she intended)
Incorporate new research and/or your evolved thinking on the subject
When revising, it can be a challenge to know what to keep from your first edition, what needs updating, and what your audience expects from you now. The revise your existing book package gives you a forum to:
Discuss your goals for your revision
Identify new areas for exploration on your topic that have arisen since you published (AI, anyone?)
Bounce ideas off an expert
Formulate guidelines to help you decide what to keep, what to revise, and what to shed
We’ll have one 75-minute Zoom call to plan your revision. I’ll send you a short email summary of what we discussed for you to reference as you start to revise.
Cost for one-time or first revise your existing book call: $325
Additional calls if desired: $225 each
The next step is to request a free 30-minute chat or let me know you’d like a revise-your-existing-book call.
